A bit more about my course

As the first week is pretty much gone I thought it'd be nice to write a little summary of it and tell you what I actually am studying. My timetable is going to be the same until Christmas and when the second semester starts in January it's gonna be slightly different, even though I'll still have at least one same module. In uni a lecture means a larger group and going through the topic of the day, writing some notes and mainly the lecturer speaking and giving the students ideas to think about. A seminar is after a lecture, in a smaller group and will go further into the topic but this time in a form of discussion. This week we first talked about the questions we had been given to think about and then went through them with the whole class, each group telling their point of view. We had about 30 pages of text to read prior to the seminar, and will have about the same amount each week. Luckily, we were asked to get only one book, which covers two modules (taught by the same lecturer) and most of the readings are going to be either on virtual learning environment (VLE) or university's internet library. It's quite handy because we got £400 loaded on a card, which works in the uni book shop when we started and so far I have only spent my own money on the stuff I got beforehand, like pens, pencils and a notebook.

I have two more of a theory based modules, which are Analysing Language and Image, and Media, Culture and Society. To balance it out I have two more practical modules - Introduction to Radio and Introduction to Video. I am quite pleased how it balances not only the amount of reading we are going to have but also gives the studying a lot of variety. I have read 30 pages but also listened to different radio channels and programs and written my thoughts down as homework! On the radio module's first workshop we actually went out and recorded sound on little recorders, and next week we are going to edit them. On the video module next week we are going to have a workshop to get to know the video cameras and might even start thinking about what we are going to film. It's so cool. I have actually been at work every day apart from Monday and Tuesday (and today of course) but I think I will need either Wednesday or Friday as a day off  in the future to finish any reading and course work. I might just be able to do about 18 hours a week, which should be enough. All in all the first week was great. It is quite hard to make friends because every class has a different mixed group, so even though you had the same lecture with someone, your seminar might be in a completely different group. Luckily I now know at least somebody from all my classes, not that I'm worried. I'd like to fast forward to the time when I know everybody on my course and have loads of new friends. :-D But that's what I'm like, I would rather know everybody. I have actually decided to become a student rep, which means that I'd basically be a spokesperson for my course. If anybody was struggling with anything or wanted to change something, they'd come to me and I'd take it further and try to sort it out. Sounds amazing, right? I'll tell the course tomorrow and see what they think. I'll let you know how I get on!

Täällä luento tarkottaa isommalle ryhmälle pidettyä tuntia, jolla luennoitsija kertoo viikon aiheesta ja me kirjotetaan muistiinpanoja.

:-D Kaiken kaikkiaan eka viikko on menny tosi mukavasti. Luokkakavereihin tutustuminen on sujunu ihan hyvin, vaikka se onkin vähän vaikeeta kun joka tunnilla on sekasin eri ihmiset eri ryhmissä, eli vaikka maanantain luennolla oisinkin yksien tyyppien kanssa, seminaarissa onkin ihan eri ryhmä. En oo kyllä huolissani ettenkö sais kavereita, mut haluisin vaan pikakelata siihen että tuntisin kaikki, mut sellanen mä oon, haluisin olla kaikkien kaveri. :-D Oon muuten ajatellu, tai no lähinnä päättäny, et haluun alkaa tavallaan tukioppilaaks täällä.
