Self portrait video project

As a final project for Networked Image module, we were asked to create a self portrait of 2-3 minutes. I immediately had loads of ideas, and as I went to Finland for Easter holidays, I managed to get quite a lot of footage from there, which I think makes the clip that extra bit special. Now, I'll let you watch it first and talk more about it below.

+ Meijän loppuprojekti Networked Image kurssille oli kuvata 2-3 minuutin omakuvausvideo. Meille ei annettu mitään ohjeita, joten toteutus oli vapaa, ja mulla oli tietenkin heti monta ideaa. Pääsiäislomalla Suomessa sain kuvattua aika paljon materiaalia, ja sen takia toi pätkä onkin jopa ripauksen kivempi ja henkilökohtasempi. Nyt annan teijän kattoa sen ja kirjottelen lisää tossa alempana.

First of all, I absolutely love the song I found. It has such a happy rhythm, which describes my usual mood really well. I got the idea of writing the narrative on 'blog' during one of the lectures, because we were watching some clips other students made last year, and I realised that it was possible to add writing in between the clips. I thought it would make sense for me to write my thoughts on a 'blog' because it's such a big part of my life. I recorded my screen as I typed, and made the writing faster on a movie editor. To pick ideas for the main clips, I basically listed down a handful of things I find important in my life, like nail polish and smoothies. One of my favourite parts of the video is me walking from Finland to England, which I got the idea for on the plane to Finland. There and then I decided I needed to film it because anything a bit funny is so me. I also had a clip of me eating a carrot and pulling a crazy face but it didn't unfortunately fit in this clip. :-D I filmed everything freehand, so if I was to do a video again, I'd probably use a tripod. I filmed with my DSLR camera, which was quite enough qualitywise. I mean, Youtube always makes the quality a lot worse anyway, that's why it's good to turn the quality to HD. Altogether I am super happy with how it turned out, and have been playing it on the background whilst writing this because I just like the song that much. To be honest, this project was something I would do just for fun, to then put it up on here, because I generally enjoy documenting my life, and I guess I know myself quite well to describe myself easily. I've been editing it pretty much all day, with the good old Windows movie maker. :-D And now I have one presentation and one project out the way, which makes the workload a little bit lighter. 

+ Alkuun on pakko mainita, että toi biisi on mun mielestä niin hyvä! Se on niin ilonen ja rytmikäs ja mun mielestä kuvaa mun yleisfiilistä tosi hyvin. Sain idean tohon 'blogiin' kirjottamiseen yhellä luennolla, koska katottiin viime vuoden opiskelijatöitä ja tajusin, että videoiklippien väliin voi lisätä tekstiä. Ja blogiin kirjottaminen nyt on aika olennainen osa mun elämää, joten jo senkin takia mun mielestä se oli ihan nappivalinta. Nauhotin mun näyttöä kun kirjotin noi pätkät ja nopeutin sitä editoimalla. Valitsin ideat noihin pääklippeihin kirjottamalla paperille useemman asian, jotka on mulle tärkeitä, esim. smoothiet ja kynsilakka. :-D Yks mun lempparikohdista on se, missä kävelen Suomesta Englantiin. Sain siihen ajatuksen lentokoneessa, ja päätin, että se on pakko kuvata koska mikään vähänkin hauska on niin mun juttu. Kuvasin myös klipin, missä syön porkkanaa ja näytän aika sekopäiseltä hullunkiilto silmissä, mutta se ei harmiksi mahtunu tohon videolle. Kuvasin kaiken vapaalla kädellä, ja jos kuvaisin uudestaan käyttäisin varmaan tripodia. Kuvasin mun järkkärillä, mikä oli mun mielestä ihan tarpeeks hyvänlaatunen. Sitä paitsi Youtube aina tuhoo laadun, ja siks toi kannattaakin laittaa HD-asetukselle. Kaiken kaikkiaan oon supertyytyväinen tohon ja oon soittanu sitä tässä taustalla kun oon kirjottanu koska toi biisi on vaan niin ihana. Oikeestihan tää projekti ois sellanen, että voisin ihan hyvin vuoks kuvailla ja editoida, ihan vaan blogia varten koska tykkään dokumentoida mun arkea. Ja kai mä tunnen itteni tarpeeks hyvin, että voin helposti keksiä aiheita tällaselle videoille. Oon muokannu tota tänään melkeenpä koko päivän, vanhalla kunnon Movie Makerilla, hehe. :-D Ja nyt on yks esitelmä ja yks projekti vähemmän murhedittavaa, jee! 

Photography project behind the scenes

On Monday we were doing the photography project, which was due yesterday, and I obviously couldn't resist taking some random shots. I absolutely love them little flowers and it makes me so happy to see the spring coming. For the photo project we decided to take photos of bikes, and because there's loads of them in Cambridge it was quite easy. It's nice to see the whole series of 14 photos, and you can find it on my portfolio blog, here. I've had a horrible cold all this week and have started getting a really nasty cough as well. The news telling about the smog in the UK doesn't really make me feel better, luckily I read that Cambridge is one of the least affected areas. Today I'm at work and before heading to town I decided to write another post about photography, as we are going through the photography theme in the networked image module. I posted it on my portfolio blog, here. You can have a read if you're interested in the topic. It's maybe a bit deeper than the post I put on here and has a bit of a different point of view. I just feel so passionate about photography and have all these thoughts about it. I really hope I'll do well answering the essay question. :-) I got my hair cut yesterday and I'm looooviiing it. + Maanantaina kuvattiin valokuvaprojektia varten enkä tietenkää voinu vastustaa parin random kuvan nappaamista. Nähtiin myös ihania pieniä kukkasia ja sitä auttamatta tulee niin hyvälle mielelle kun tietää että kevät tulee. Valokuvaprojektin aiheeksi me valittiin polkupyörä, koska niitähän Cambridgesta löytyy. On kiva kattoo mitä saatiin aikaan ja tekin näätte lopputuloksen mun portfolioblogissä täällä. mulla on ollu kamala flunssa koko viikon ja nyt on alkanu olemaan tosi inhottavaa yskääkin. Ei kauheesti auta, että Englantiin on levinny jotain saastesumua, mutta onneks luin että Cambridgeen se ei oo niin pahasti vaikuttanu. Tänään mä oon töissä ja ennen kun lähen kaupungille ajattelin kirjottaa toisen postauksen valokuvaus-aiheesta, koska ollaan nyt käyty sitä läpi networked image kurssillakin. Laitoin sen mun portfolio-blogiin ja voitte lukea sen täällä. Voitte lukea jos aihe kiinnostaa, laitoin siihen vähän erilaisia pointteja ja ehkä vähän syvällisempää pohdiskelua. Twitter fiction story

As I said in the previous post, the second part of the writing project was to pick one of the twitter fictions and make up another 9 tweets to form a story. We did it in pairs, and because we chose to use one of the tweets I came up with my pair was to come up with the seconds one, and so on. As media students we did it all on Facebook messenger, haha! It was a lot clearer copying and pasting the story as it built up, and even though it felt like a big deal in the beginning we got it done quite quickly. I found the exercise really interesting because you couldn't really guess what the pair was gonna write to continue the story, and it was exciting to see what was going to happen next. I didn't think I was that creative because I haven’t written anything like this in years but I was positively surprised how easily I could come up with ideas. His hands were covered in blood. Where did it all come from? It’s not like he deserved it – he was only there to clean the toilets.

It was his first day on the job as well. A day he can barely remember. Everything was a blur and when he thought about it all he’d see is red.

The blood trail lead to the back door. They had to close down the business. Nobody ever suspected the 17-year-old waitress.

But beyond a pretty face lies a corrupt fakery, an evil mind and the emotional range of a she-devil. Still, she was a good waitress.

If only somebody knew where she was. They called her a psychopath, said she’d feel no remorse. Her parents wanted to deny it all ever happened.

They even fled to Cornwall to get away from her. If only they showed her love and took her as well, they wouldn’t have died in their caravan.

She was completely messed up and would be facing a lifetime in prison. But this wasn’t all about her. It was him who originally started it all.

They shouldn’t have mistaken lust for love- they aren’t the same. Both of them so badly blinded by lust that they used love as their weapon.

Reckless youngsters. They should’ve know love is deadly. The nationwide alerts hadn’t been successful, everybody was afraid they’d get away.

It wasn’t until today that the police found a note that said ‘LOOKIN 2 MURDER’ stuck on the door of HEL330 at Anglia Ruskin University…

HEL 330 is one of the rooms in the university. :-D I quite like the ending my pair came up with but I might have kept the location more neutral. Obviously it’s uni work so it’s alright to pin it to our uni but I might have enjoyed a more mysterious look to the whole thing. Then again, I’m really happy with how we did it. My absolute favourite is the fourth tweet my pair made up, I think she’s used really good wording and describes it all so well. I enjoyed the writing and creating, and am definitely looking forward to the other writing projects! Today I went to town and basically wrote this whole this to my portfolio blog and then copied it here, haha. Now I've got the exciting job of translating the twitter fiction to Finnish. :-D

+  Niinkuin viime postauksessa sanoin, niin twitter fiction kirjotustehtävän toinen osa oli valita yks twiitti parin kanssa ja kirjottaa vuorotellen yheksän muuta twiittiä niin, että niistä muodostu tarina. Me päädyttiin valitsemaan toi mun rikosteemanen twiitti. Mediaopiskelijoina kirjotettiin se tietty Facebookin messengerissä koska se nyt vaan on niin helppoa, ja voitiin copypastettaa tarinaa sitä vauhtia kun se muodostu. Vaikka alkuun se tuntu tosi vaikeelta ja isotöiseltä hommalta, niin loppujen lopuks se tuli aika nopeesti valmiiksi. Mun mielestä tää oli tosi kiva tehtävä koska tarinan kulkua ei voinu arvata ollenkaan kun omat twiitit muokkautu sen mukaan mitä toinen oli kirjottanu. En ajatellu, että pystyisin kirjottamaan näinkin luovaa tekstiä, mutta yllätin itteni positiivisesti. Päätin nyt suomentaa tänkin, mutta tossa yläpuolella on toi alkuperänen tarina. :-)

Hänen kätensä olivat veren peitossa. Mistä se kaikki tuli? Eihän hän ansainnut tätä - hänhän oli vain siivoamassa vessoja.

Se oli hänen ensimmäinen työpäivänsä. Päivä, jota hän tuskin muistaa. Kun hän ajatteli sitä, kaikki oli pelkkää sumua ja hän näki vain punaista.

Verivana johti takaovelle. Koko paikka piti sulkea. Kukaan ei epäillytkään 17-vuotiasta tarjoilijatarta.

Mutta nätti ulkokuori peittää alleen korruptoituneen teeskentelyn, kieroutuneen mielen ja paholaisen tunneskaalan. Hän oli kuitenkin hyvä tarjoilija.

Kunpa vain joku tietäisi missä hän on. He kutsuivat häntä psykopaatiksi, ei katuisi tekojaan. Hänen vanhempansa halusivat kieltää kaiken.

He jopa pakenivat Cornwalliin päästäkseen häntä karkuun. Jos he vain olisivat rakastaneet häntä ja kutsuneet mukaan, niin he eivät olisi kuolleet asuntovaunussaan.

Hänen elämänsä oli sekaisin ja hän joutuisi loppuelämäkseen vankilaan. Mutta kaikki ei ollutkaan hänen vikansa. Se alkoi pojan ideasta.

Heidän ei olisi pitänyt sekoittaa himoa ja rakkautta - ne eivät ole sama asia. Molemmat niin himosta sokeita, että he käyttivät rakkautta aseenaan.

Holtittomat teinit. Heidän olisi pitänyt tietää, että rakkaus tappaa. Maanlaajuiset hälytykset eivät tuottaneet tulosta, kaikki pelkäisivät että he pääsisivät pakoon.

Vasta tänään poliisi löysi viestin jossa luki 'AION TAPPAA' luokkahuoneen HEL330 ovesta Anglia Ruskinin yliopistosta...

HEL 330 on yks yliopiston luokkahuoneista. :-D Tykkään kyllä tosta lopusta, mutta mä oisin ehkä pitäny ton lopun vähän mysteerisempänä. Tietty se on koulutyö, niin kai siihen voi sisältää koulun. Kokonaisuudessaan kuitenkin tykkäsin miten toi muotoutu (vaikka toi suomennos nyt vähän ontuukin hehheee). Mun lemppari on toi neljäs twiitti, jonka suomentaminen oli kaikista vaikeinta, miten voi suomentaa emotional range of a she-devil??? :-D Myös suomen hän sana tuottaa vaikeuksia kun pitäis erottaa tyttö ja poika. Kääntäjät, tiedän miltä teistä tuntuu. Tänään mä menin käymään kaupungissa ja periaatteessa sen jälkeen en oo muuta tehnykkää ku kirjottanu tätä postausta eka portfolioblogiin ja sitten tänne, hehee. Nyt vähä criminal mindsia koska poikakaveri tuli kotiin! 

First homework - twitter fiction!

I've somehow not felt like posting this week. I've had loads of pictures but nothing to write, so I decided to do it the simple way and repost what I put on my portfolio blog. :-D This week on the networked image module we were given a task of writing three pieces of twitter fiction. I haven’t used twitter before so I didn’t really know what it was all about. We were told there were examples on the Guardian’s website and on twitter under #twitterfiction, and I found out thattwitter fiction is basically a moment from a story that supposedly was told or a thing that happened. It strangely mixes poetry, fiction and is kept to 140 characters, like tweets are. I got the first potential twitter fiction idea right after the lecture when I missed my bus. I did have to change the wording of it quite a bit to fit to the character limits and in order to save the ‘revealing’ plot twist to the end. Here it goes, my first ever twitter fiction:

• I ran for my life, I did not want to miss it, but I did. Then I heard the bus hadn’t even turned up – they said it was the diversions.

Mulla ei oo jotenkaan ollu sellanen olo, että haluisin postata jotain vaikka kuvia olis, joten päätin oikasta ja laittaa tänne meijän ekan kunnollisen projektipostauksen networked image kurssilta. Meille annettiin tehtäväksi kirjottaa kolme twitter fictionia, ja koska mähän en käytä twitteria, mulla ei ollu hajuakaan mitä se oikeen tarkotti. The Guardianin nettisivuilta ja twitteristä hakemaslla #twitterfiction löyty esimerkkejä, ja mulle selvis, että twitter fiction on hetki tai tapahtuma tarinasta joka muka kerrottiin tai hetki joka tapahtui. Se on periaatteessa runojen ja romaanien sekotus, mutta tiivistetty twitterin sallimaan 140 merkin tilaan. Sain mun ekan twitter fiction idean kun myöhästyin bussista heti luennon jälkeen. Mun piti aluksi muokata sitä aika paljon, varsinkin että saisin sen mahdutettua tohon merkkimäärään ja että saisin säästettyä yllättävän juonenkäänteen viimeseksi. Tosta ylhäältä näette alkuperäsen, mutta käännään sen tähän myös suomeksi.

•  Juoksin henkeni edestä,  en halunnut myöhästyä, mutta niin kävi. Sitten kuulin ettei bussi ollut edes tullut - johtuu tietöistä, he sanoivat.

After the first bright idea I had nothing on my mind, and trying to think of at least something I decided to write a twitter fiction of my struggles…

• Eternal emptiness… no ideas, no inspiration. She had been thinking about it for days… How to write a striking twitter fiction?

Haha, I was quite amused by this one. I’m not one to take things too seriously, so when I struggle I try just something different. This could be a really deep and emotional bit of a novel but then it’s got the hilarious twist. I quite started to enjoy the writing project as I managed to come up with the two fictions. I noticed that it’s quite easy to tell the genre of different twitter fictions, I mean you can have horror, crime, romance, or whatever you’d like! l decided to try something different next…

 Ekan kirkkaan idean jälkeen mun pää olikin ihan tyhjä ja kun yritin kovasti pohtia ihan vaan jotain, päätin kirjottaa twitter fictionin kirjottamisen vaikeudesta...

• Ikuista tyhjyyttä... ei ideoita, eikä inspiraatiota. Hän oli pohtinut jo päiväkausia... Miten kirjoittaisin osuvan twitter fictionin?

Hehhe, tulipas hauska. En yleensäkään ota asioita liian vakavasti, joten nyt kun ei homma sujunu päätin kokeilla erilaista lähestymistapaa. Tää vois oikeesti olla joku tosi syvällinen ja tunteellinen kohta romaanista, mutta sitten siinä onkin hauska loppu. Aloin itseasiassa tykkäämään tästä tehtävästä kun olin keksiny jo kaksi twitter fictionia. Huomasin myös, että eri genret on aika selkeesti esillä twitter fictioneissa, koska voi olla romanttinen, kauhu, tai esim. rikosteema. Seuraavaksi päätin koittaa jotain vähän erilaista...

Ha! Got a bit of scary crime stuff going on there. :-D It wasn’t actually that hard figuring out the third one, it just came from somewhere! I felt so happy after completing the first task we've been given during the first year, as I wrote in the last post. Next we were told we'd have to pick one of the twitter fictions and make a story out of it, writing 5 tweets each in pairs. You'll see soon which one we picked!

Haa, tulipas vähän jännempi rikosvaikutteinen twitter fictioni. Vikan keksiminen olikin oikeestaan melko helppoa kun aivot oli vetreentyny. Mulla oli tosi kiva fiilis kun olin saanu tän tehtävän tehtyä, kuten sanoin viime postauksessa. Seuraavaksi meille kerrottiin, että noista pitäis parin kanssa valita yksi ja kirjottaa siitä yhteensä 10 twitter fictionin pitunen tarina. Pian kerron, että mikä me oikeen valittiin!
